About QIC

QIC ~ Quick Image Captcha - is a simple, free technology that uses a person's vision to make sure a human is in fact filling out any form on your website. As a Captcha tool, QIC attempts to prevent web spiders and automated scrapers from abusing your site by verifying that a real person is using your form.

With QIC, real visitors to your site validate their presence by answering a visual challenge using random pictures. Only by answering correctly can the form can be processed. Currently, two methods are available for determining human presence:

¤ Topic Match - the user must select the topic related to three images
¤ Image Selection - the user must click the images related to the specified topic.

You may use either method as best suited to your application or can have QIC randomly pick the mode.

In general, Captcha technology (aka Human Interactive Proofs) attempts to solve many issues facing the integrity of websites:

  ¤ Abuse in registrations
  ¤ Spam in blogs
  ¤ Fights form spam
¤ Email addresses culled by scrapers
  ¤ Database scraping
¤ Attempts to send email via your system
  ¤ Spam in support site
  ¤ Dictionary-based password attacks.

Limitations of Existing Captcha Solutions

Most captcha solutions today are text-based and almost all of these have been defeated (citation). The biggest complaint with current captcha techniques is that they are often difficult to decipher, in fact annoying and frustrating. This is the result of making them increasingly fuzzier to thwart cracking by automation. The result is that on average, most people now take 2 attempts to type in an answer.

Why QIC is Better

QIC is totally different. In its simple point and click approach, QIC employs images in a two-pass process: the first pass generates a challenge and its related images, afterwhich the user's response is validated in the second pass. Once validated, the data in the form can be processed by your site.

QIC is free, but you must register first to use it. The only requirement is that you agree to maintain a link back to this site from your form.

Demo QIC: The easiest way to explain QIC is for you to try our demos and see it in action visually. We have demos for the two methods we have developed: Topic Match Demo and Image Selection Demo.

The QIC Technique is extremely hard to crack through brute-force automation, since hundreds of topics are available for selection and each of the three images is picked at random from 10,000 topic-related images. This gives well over a million images to work with, and makes it very time-consuming for someone to defeat. Although no captcha is 100% tamper-proof, we offer tips to further protect against brute force attacks. QIC also detects human presence to prevent rapid, repeated access to your forms by automated bot scripts. This forces them to slow down to the point that it is uneconomical to scrape your data or spam your site.
