New Form Validation Tool Uses Images to Prove Human Presence at Websites
QIC is a free form validation tool based on images that makes it fun to solve Captchas that protect websites. Captchas are used to prevent automated internet tools from using websites, attempting to validate human presence by making the user answer a challenge.
The abundance of automated tools and internet robots to spam websites and scrape information from on-line databases has prompted the use of Captcha systems to thwart them.
Existing Captcha systems are based on matching images of randomly generated letters, numbers and words. The biggest complaint with current captcha techniques is that they are often difficult to decipher, in fact annoying and frustrating. This is the result of making them increasingly more distorted to thwart cracking by automation at the cost of readability. Consequently, most people now take two or more attempts to type in a correct answer.
Compounding the disadvantages of text-based Captchas is the fact that 90% of text-based Captcha systems have already been reliably broken.
Instead of text, QIC uses topics and images to present the user with a simple visual challenge. This makes QIC easier, in fact fun, for people to use. Website owners make a few changes to their scripts to integrate QIC. Free, Open Source code is provided upon registration.
QIC uses a simple point and click interface - no typing is required. The user can either select a topic that relates to random pictures or select the pictures related to a topic. New topics are continually added by users playing the Eye Guess Game. Hundreds of topics are available for selection and each topic has upwards of 10,000 related images randomly selected from Yahoo. This gives well over a million images to work with, and makes it very time-consuming for someone to defeat through brute force techniques. In addition, QIC uses delays and IP logging to further enhance its integrity, making QIC a strong alternative to text-based Captchas.
